The best known and most attractive area of Peru is, without a doubt, Cusco and Machu Picchu. Both places are keys to the Incan culture and surprise visitors as much with the colonial
style of Cusco as the magnificence and ambiance of the ruins of Machu Picchu.
Cusco was the capital of the Incan empire and shows its importance with its typical streets, white facades, and reddish
roofs. With a cold and dry climate, Cusco has interesting museums, various churches, and some of the main attractions that make up the Plaza de Armas (the center of the city) are the
Santo Domingo temple and the Piedra de los Doce Ángulos (Stone of the Twelve Angles). There are various ruins close to Cusco including Sacsayhuaman, Puca Pucará,
Qenko, Tambo Machay, Pikillaqta, Tipón, Ollantaytambo, and Pisac.
From Cusco it is possible to visit Machu Picchu through different routes, one of these is following the ancient Incan route, Inca
Trail, which crossing ruins and small villages arrivals at the citadel of Machu Picchu. The Inca Trail can be done in 2 to 5 days, with the best time of year to do the trail between
May and November. In the valley of the Urubamba river is found Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas.
Between the mountains Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu extends this ancient citadel and it is possible to visit the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Tomb, the Sacred
Plaza, the Temple of the Three Windows, and the Temple of the Moon located below Huayna Picchu, from which a panoramic view of Machu Picchu can be seen.
