Peru: Destinations : Jungle

With a surface area of 1,532,806 hectares (3,678,734 acres), it is one of the largest protected areas of the world's tropical region. Along with the Reserved Zone and the Cultural Zone, it constitutes the Manu Biosphere Reservation, recognized by UNESCO in 1977. It includes the entire basin of the Manu River, from the Andes (more than 4,000 meters above sea level) up to the Amazon plains.
This park, given its climatic and geographic characteristics, has an enormous diversity of wildlife. More than 2,000 species of vegetation, 13 primate species, five felines, a thousand bird species and still unknown amounts of fish, amphibians, reptiles, and insects.
Within the park limits there are some species endangered throughout the rest of the continent, such as the andean bear, the taruca, the black lizard, and the sea lion. There are important populations of these species in the Manu River.
It is possible to visit only the Reserved and Cultural Zones.
