It is located at 3,800 meters (12,464
ft) above sea level. Within its 340,000 hectares (816,000 acres)
we find the famous Cordillera Blanca (the highest tropical mountainous
range in the world), whose peaks reach
over 4,000 meters (13,120 ft) above sea level. Furthermore, it is
home to a vast variety of animal species and vegetation: queñual
woods and the puya de Raimondi, among the flora. Among the animals,
there are condors, pumas, vicuñas, white-tailed deers, taruca,
or andean deer, etc. Another important characteristic of this park
is its hydrologic net, composed of more than 300 lagoons, 663 glaciers
and 41 rivers. All this moved UNESCO to proclaim this park as a
Natural Patrimony of Humanity.
