Lago Titicaca (Titicaca Lake)

With a surface area of 8,300 square kilometers (5,187.5 sq. mi.), a maximum length of 195 kilometers (121.8 mi), 285 meters (934 ft) of maximum depth and an average width of 50 kilometers (31.25 mi), it is the highest navigable lake in the world (at 3,808 meters above sea level). One of the unique characteristics of this lake, shared by Peru and Bolivia, is the temperature of the water. It is very warm for that altitude (10º to 12º Celsius, or 50º to 53.6ºF), allowing for the existence of a rich aquatic flora and fauna. All of the patches of cattails and bulrush existing in the bays of Puno and Huancané are protected by the Titicaca National Reserve.
